  • Heat (above ~35 °C). Higher temperatures speed up undesirable side reactions that slowly thicken the internal “solid electrolyte interphase”. Capacity and efficiency decline faster as temperatures rise. Although LiFePOtolerates up to 45 °C–50 °C in day-to-day use and resists thermal runaway better than NMC, prolonged heat still shortens its service life. 
  • Cold (below ~0 °C). Electrolyte viscosity increases, slowing ion movement. Discharge current falls, and charging must pause because lithium can plate onto the anode and permanently damage the cells. Many BMSs block charging below freezing, resuming only when cell temperatures warm—either naturally or via integrated heaters in low-temp models. 

Temperature stress is cumulative. A good installation keeps cells in the moderate zone most of the time, leaving the BMS to catch the occasional spike.

If you live in inland WA, the NT, or far-north Queensland, a LiFePOpack rated to 45 °C–50 °C operating temperature will shrug off summer peaks better than older chemistries.

Install indoors or insulate 

Even in alpine regions, a well-sealed garage usually stays above freezing, making it the simplest solution. Where ambient temperatures plunge below 0 °C, add an insulated outdoor cabinet or select a battery with an integrated heater. Some LiFePOmodels advertise discharge down to –20 °C, but remember that capacity at that temperature can drop by 30 % or more. 

Understand cold-weather charging limits 

Most BMSs block charging below 0 °C (some cut out at 5 °C for extra safety). Low-temperature batteries may allow gentle charging while simultaneously warming the cells. Check your datasheet —never assume your pack can accept a charge in deep frost. 

Confirm performance claims 

Marketing figures can blur “operating” and “optimal” ranges. Ask your Solar Accreditation Australia (SAA)-accredited installer to interpret the curves: look for the point where capacity or charge current starts to nosedive and design around that, not just the headline rating.
